How much does diet affect hair health

A measured look at how iron, vitamin D and protein intake relate to hair loss.

In hair restoration the result is not decided on a single day. The capacity of the donor area, the stage the loss has reached and how the hairline will change over the next ten years all need to be discussed before anyone sits down in the operating room. For that reason we assess every enquiry across the whole scalp rather than through one region.

The sections below gather the points our patients ask about most often. Even so, every scalp is different, and a definite assessment can only be made after an examination and a trichoscopic review.

How the assessment works

The first stage is an examination of the scalp; trichoscopy measures hair shaft thickness, the number of hairs per follicular unit and the density of the donor area. Iron, thyroid and vitamin D levels are requested where needed. This review determines which method is chosen.

After the assessment we talk through the options, the graft range and the expected outcome. The patient daily routine, working pattern and expectations are an important part of the plan, and no density is promised that cannot realistically be reached.

What to pay attention to

  • Stopping blood thinners and alcohol before the operation, with clinical approval.
  • Following the washing instructions exactly through the first ten days.
  • Keeping direct sun off the recipient area for at least three weeks.
  • Contacting the clinic without delay if there is pain, marked redness or any unexpected change.

What happens afterwards

The transplanted hairs shed at around the second month; this stage, known as shock loss, is expected. Growth begins from the third month and the result settles at twelve months. In between, monthly reviews record the progress.

The information shared in this article is for general guidance and does not replace a clinical examination. The right approach for your own situation becomes clear after an assessment at the clinic.
